The Watercress Line

Little bit more research done at the HCC archives watching a short video on the Watercress Line running from New Alresford to Alton.

It was named after the watercress fields that lay adjacent to the route of the train.  It was closed as a public service in 1976 only to be reopened by a private firm in 1977, mainly as a recreational line with steam trains running the length.

However, it was formerly used to transport cress up the line, as cress has a short shelf life and ideally needs good transport links to get it to the point of sale quickly before it goes off.
